What is the EMDR Process? What Can I Expect?
The process starts with finding a therapist in CT who understands the nuances of working with traumatic experiences. Booking an EMDR session will be your first step.
The first couple sessions are information gathering, informing you of the process, and assessing the need.
At this point, EMDR counseling can begin. The therapist will work with you to identify the core traumatic events or struggles seeking resolution. This could mean briefly exploring current and past emotions and circumstances, but only as you feel comfortable. Our therapists create safe spaces and will never force you to communicate about something if you are not ready.

During each subsequent session, the therapist will track your eye movements from side to side, referred to as bilateral stimulation. They may also employ tapping, sounds, or other therapeutic modalities. In any case, the idea is to have the brain reprocess memories. Often our brains will store a traumatic memory differently, and it will prevent healthy healing. Because healing hasn’t taken place, your brain still associates these memories with danger, creating a reaction. The eye movements mimic the brain processing, and allows memories to be stored differently.
Other discussions may center around exploring the source of trauma or your current condition. These can give a picture of how the healing process is going and how much more CT EMDR trauma therapy you might need. However, it is different from just regular talk therapy. You will be doing less talking (although still some) and more exercises.
Your therapist will also teach you coping skills during your EMDR work to help you on your healing journey.
